Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia is the enlargement of the breast gland and fatty tissue in men. Various factors can contribute to this condition, such as hormonal imbalance, genetic predisposition, or the use of anabolic hormones. An enlarged chest area causes not only physical discomfort but also psychological stress or dissatisfaction with one’s appearance. Unfortunately, diet and exercise usually do not solve this problem, and surgical intervention becomes the most effective solution. Gynecomastia surgery is a procedure that removes excess tissue to restore the patient’s natural chest contour.
Procedure Steps
At Tautrimas Aštrauskas Clinic, several methods of gynecomastia surgery are performed, with the most suitable one recommended by the doctor based on the individual patient’s situation.
Gynecomastia in Men Can be Performed:

Using only the ultrasonic VASER lipo device (more about this method in the “Liposuction” section). Through small 0.5 cm incisions, the gland and fat are broken down with ultrasound and suctioned out with an ultrasonic probe. The ultrasonic method for gynecomastia is recommended when the main issue is excess fatty tissue in the chest area.
A crescent-shaped incision is made at the lower pole of the nipple areola, and the breast gland is removed. In some cases, this method is combined with ultrasonic gland-fat breakdown.
In more complex cases, the breast gland is removed along with excess skin, and a breast lift is performed. The surgery involves an incision around the nipple and two small additional horizontal incisions on either side of the nipple.
After gynecomastia, additional corrective surgeries may be needed, most often fat grafting due to unpredictable contour depressions.
When and for whom is Gynecomastia Surgery Performed?
Gynecomastia in men is performed when the patient experiences physical and/or psychological discomfort, is dissatisfied with their appearance, and faces obstacles in daily activities or social relationships due to an enlarged chest. Common reasons for gynecomastia include hormonal imbalance, heredity, or the consequences of medication use. However, each case is individual, so we invite you to discuss your expectations, assess the causes of gynecomastia, and learn about the surgery process during a doctor’s consultation.

Preparation for Gynecomastia Surgery
– A consultation with the operating doctor is required before the surgery, during which an individual situation assessment is performed.
– If you have chronic diseases or other ailments, take medications or dietary supplements, or have had other surgeries in the past, please inform us.
– Blood tests must be performed before the surgery to assess the patient’s overall health and determine if it is safe to perform the chosen surgery.
– In some cases, a breast ultrasound is recommended before the surgery.
Postoperative Period
– During the healing period, for 1 month after the surgery, a special compression garment must be worn to accelerate subcutaneous contraction.
– Post-surgery, discomfort in the chest area is possible, but taking prescribed medications will make the healing process much easier.
– About 2 weeks after the surgery, bruising and swelling in the chest area may be noticeable.
– After the surgery, we recommend undergoing a course of manual lymphatic drainage massages. These massages activate lymph flow, normalize blood circulation, and are particularly beneficial for reducing swelling and promoting faster healing after surgery.
– The healing process is accelerated by physiotherapy procedures using laser, radio frequency, and magnet.
Frequently Asked Questions
Performed gynecomastia surgery: when can results be expected?
Typically, tissues fully heal 6-12 months after the surgery, at which point the final result is visible.
When can you sunbathe or go to a solarium after the surgery?
It is recommended to protect scars from direct sunlight for about 4-5 months after the surgery.
How to speed up the healing process after gynecomastia surgery?
Faster healing and a smoother postoperative process can be ensured by taking prescribed medications and wearing compression garments. We also recommend lymphatic drainage massages, which promote skin elasticity and reduce swelling.
Gynecomastia in boys: can gynecomastia surgery be performed?
Gynecomastia in boys and adolescents is often associated with hormonal changes. If the enlargement of breast tissue does not disappear on its own or causes significant discomfort, surgical intervention may be considered. In such cases, the course and need for surgery are discussed with the patient and their parents. This surgery is also performed at Tautrimas Aštrauskas Clinic.
How long should physical exertion be avoided after the surgery?
It is recommended to avoid physical exertion for the first month after the surgery.
How long to avoid public water bodies and saunas?
We do not recommend swimming in water bodies or visiting saunas for the first month after the surgery.
Can gynecomastia recur after surgery?
During the surgery, the breast gland is permanently removed, but fatty tissue can regrow with weight gain, hormonal disorders, or the use of certain medications.
