Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty (abdominoplasty) is a surgery that restores the aesthetic and functional condition of the abdominal area. By removing excess skin and fat and tightening separated muscles, the abdomen is given a firmer, smoother appearance. Abdominal wall plastic surgery is most effective when body changes are difficult to achieve through exercise and a balanced diet alone: for example, in cases of a protruding abdomen due to pregnancy-induced diastasis (muscle separation), after a cesarean section, or when dealing with excess skin after significant weight loss. If this problem is not addressed over time, the risk of health issues increases, as the function of the abdominal wall is not only aesthetic but also vital: to protect internal organs.
Procedure Steps
Abdominal wall plastic surgery combined with abdominal and waist liposuction is a very common combination of procedures, allowing for maximally effective results and a slimmer waistline.
Additionally, abdominoplasty can be combined with breast surgeries (such as breast lift or breast augmentation with implants or fat). This combination is better known as a “Mommy makeover” and is intended for women who wish to regain their body shape after pregnancy.
Abdominoplasty at Tautrimas Aštrauskas Clinic is performed under general anesthesia. We ensure patient comfort and safety throughout the procedure, and any questions you have regarding preparation for surgery or postoperative recommendations are discussed during consultations with the doctor.
Fat is Suctioned from the Abdominal and Waist Areas.
The skin with subcutaneous tissue is separated from the abdominal wall, separated abdominal muscles are sewn together, and the abdominal wall is reinforced.
Excess skin is removed to maintain a natural appearance, and a new navel is formed in a new location. The incision is made as close to the pubic area (or lower abdomen) as possible so that the scar is covered by underwear.
When and for whom is Abdominoplasty Performed?
Abdominoplasty is a solution for your body changes if you are dealing with excess skin, fat in the abdominal area, weakened abdominal muscles, or abdominal wall separation (diastasis). Although these symptoms are most commonly encountered by women who have given birth, abdominoplasty after childbirth is not the only case where the surgery can be beneficial. Abdominal wall plastic surgery is also recommended when excess skin appears after body mass changes.
For women who have given birth, abdominoplasty is performed no less than 4-6 months after childbirth or breastfeeding. Due to a higher risk of complications, abdominoplasty is not recommended for patients with a body mass index greater than 30. If you desire this surgery, the body mass index should be reduced to 27. If you have chronic diseases, it is necessary to consult with the operating surgeon and anesthesiologist before planning the surgery. Each case is individual, so we recommend contacting the clinic and visiting for a consultation with the doctor, during which we will discuss the need for surgery and further steps in detail.

Preparation for Abdominoplasty Surgery
– A consultation with the operating doctor is necessary.
– If you have chronic diseases or other ailments, take medications or dietary supplements, or have had other surgeries in the past, please inform us during the consultation.
– Before the surgery, blood tests are necessary to assess the patient’s overall health and whether it is safe to perform the chosen surgery. We inform you about the necessary tests during the consultation.
– We recommend quitting smoking at least 2 weeks before the surgery. If you have a smoking history, discuss it with the operating doctor.
Postoperative Period
Bruising in the abdominal area may be visible for 2-3 weeks, swelling for 2-3 months. After abdominoplasty, the patient is provided with all necessary medications to facilitate the healing process. To ensure the smoothest postoperative period, we also recommend following these guidelines:
– Wear compression garments for 1-2 months after abdominoplasty. The exact period may vary depending on the individual situation.
– Returning to work is recommended no earlier than 2 weeks after the surgery, depending on the nature of the work. We recommend discussing this with the operating doctor.
– After the surgery, we recommend undergoing a course of manual lymphatic drainage massages. These massages activate lymph flow, normalize blood circulation, and are particularly beneficial for reducing swelling and promoting faster healing after surgery.
– The healing process is accelerated by physiotherapy procedures using laser, radio frequency, and magnet.
– During the postoperative period, it is recommended to quit smoking, but you should discuss your smoking history during the consultation.
Frequently asked questions about abdominoplasty
Abdominal wall plastic surgery: when can the final result be expected?
To see the final result, tissues need time to fully heal, swelling to subside, and the scar to form. This usually takes at least 4-6 months after the surgery. These processes may take longer, depending on the individual case.
What actions can be taken to make the scar less noticeable?
Scarring is highly individual, and the size of the scar depends on the unique characteristics of the body. In some cases, highly visible scars can be avoided with anti-scar ointments or special patches. To use anti-scar products, you should wait until the surgical wound is completely healed, i.e., at least 1 month after the surgery.
The incision-scar may be more pronounced due to greater tissue tension during the healing process. If you are not satisfied with the scar, corrective surgeries are possible – excision and re-suturing of the scar without tissue tension. Lowering the formed scar towards the pubic area is also possible.
When can you bathe after abdominoplasty?
Bathing is not recommended for 3 days after the surgery, and public water bodies should be avoided for at least 1 month. Bathing in a tub is allowed no less than 1 month after the surgery.
When does the scar fully form?
1-2 years after the surgery.
Can you give birth after the surgery?
The surgery does not prevent carrying a baby to term, but in rare cases, abdominoplasty may need to be repeated after childbirth.
When can you visit a sauna or solarium?
After 1-2 months. When going to a solarium, it is necessary to cover the incision sites with patches and protect them from the solarium or direct sunlight.
