Liposuction

Liposuction (liposuction) is a procedure that helps remove unwanted fat deposits in various areas of the body (face, abdomen, back, thighs, etc.). A liposuction procedure is not considered equivalent to weight loss, but it is helpful when desired body contours are difficult to achieve through exercise and diet alone—for example, after pregnancy, with a genetic predisposition to accumulate fat in certain areas, or due to hormonal changes that also affect fat accumulation in specific regions.

Procedure Steps

Liposuction with the VASER Lipo Ultrasound Device

At the Tautrimas Aštrauskas Clinic, liposuction is performed using the VASER lipo ultrasound method under general anesthesia. During the procedure, a special ultrasound device separates fat cells and facilitates fat removal from the body. Key advantages of the VASER lipo method include lower invasiveness and tissue damage, better skin retraction after surgery, and more effective results. The operation is performed through small 0.5 cm incisions; an ultrasound probe separates adipocytes (fat cells) and a special cannula is used to suction the fat.
If needed, liposuction is also performed as part of a fat grafting procedure, where the aspirated fat is processed and injected into another body or facial area (for example, the breasts or buttocks). The ultrasound used during the operation helps obtain more fat suitable for grafting, which is especially important for slim patients.

When and for whom is Liposuction Performed?

Liposuction is not a weight-loss method or an alternative to a healthy, active lifestyle—it is a procedure designed to refine existing body lines. This operation is best suited for people with problem areas that do not respond to weight-loss efforts through exercise or healthy eating.
Fat can be removed from various body areas: possible double-chin liposuction, liposuction of the jawline, neck, and face; removal of fat from the upper arms, waist, back, or abdomen; liposuction of the legs (inner and outer thighs, calves, knees, saddlebag areas); gynecomastia. If you experience any of the situations below, liposuction may be one of the most effective solutions for improving your body contour:

– After pregnancy (liposuction may be combined with abdominoplasty).
– When fat deposits persist in certain body areas despite weight loss efforts (abdominal fat removal, leg liposuction, or other body zones may be performed).
– Heredity, a genetic tendency to store fat in certain areas, even with a healthy lifestyle (for example, liposuction of the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, waist, or double chin may be performed).
– Changes in various body areas caused by health issues (e.g., hormonal disorders): fat accumulation in the waist, thighs, and facial areas; in men, enlarged breasts may be suctioned (gynecomastia).
– Liposuction is not appropriate when internal—visceral—fat predominates in the abdomen.

Preparing for Liposuction

– Preparation is highly individual; therefore, a consultation with a doctor is required before surgery to assess your expectations and the need for liposuction.
– Blood tests must be performed before the surgery to assess the patient’s overall health and determine if it is safe to perform the chosen surgery.
– To undergo liposuction, at least 4–6 months should have passed since childbirth and breastfeeding.
– If you have chronic diseases or other ailments, take medications or dietary supplements, or have had other surgeries in the past, please inform us during the consultation.

Postoperative Period

– After surgery, you may feel discomfort in the treated areas, but taking the prescribed pain medication will make recovery much easier.
– Bruising and swelling may persist for about 2–3 weeks after the procedure.
– For about 1 month after liposuction, you may experience skin numbness in the areas where fat was removed.
– Wearing compression garments is recommended for 1–2 months after surgery to accelerate skin retraction. Depending on your individual situation, your doctor will determine the exact duration.
– We recommend a course of manual lymphatic drainage massages after surgery. These massages stimulate lymph flow and normalize circulation, helping reduce swelling and speed up recovery.
– Long trips (10 hours or more) are not recommended for 1 week after surgery.
– The healing process is accelerated by physiotherapy procedures using laser, radio frequency, and magnet.
